6 Feel-Good Foods That Naturally Boost Your Mood
When weâre feeling down, we often turn to our friends for solace or look for an activity that can distract us from our worries. Our first instinct isnât usually to turn to food â unless itâs to dig into a pint of ice cream for comfortâ but eating the right diet can actually boost your mood and your happiness overall. Whether youâre stressed out and anxious or you just donât have the energy or motivation to get through the day, picking the right foods can help keep you feeling relaxed and upbeat.
It might sound farfetched that food can so greatly affect your mood, but research shows that certain types of diets can have a significant effect on your happiness levels. One study from the Journal of Psychosomatic Research found that people who ate a typical Mediterranean diet filled with whole and unprocessed foods such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, and olive oil were much happier than those who ate a standard Western diet that included a lot of fast food, dessert, and soda.
Eating healthy foods can provide you with the nutrients your body needs to help fight off depression and keep your stress levels at bay. If you need a little boost in your mood, try eating one of these six feel-good foods that will have you smiling in no-time.
1. Dark Chocolate
As if you need another excuse to eat the sweet treat: dark chocolate has been found to fight off anxiety and depression. One study from the Journal of Proteome Research found that daily consumption of chocolate led to lower levels of stress hormones. Cocoa also contains antioxidants called polyphenols which can help fight against depression and other mental disorders.
Make sure you opt for chocolate with 70 percent cocoa or higher, and avoid kinds with added sugar, which can actually have the reverse effect.
2. Berries
Berries such as raspberries and strawberries contain a natural ingredient that closely resembles valproic acid, a chemical used in prescription mood-stabilizing drugs. One study from the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine also found that daily consumption of goji berry juice increased peopleâs general feelings of wellbeing
3. Turkey
Turkey contains two important nutrients that help play a role in your mood: selenium and tryptophan. Research from the journal Biological Psychiatry found that subjects who received selenium supplements experienced a decrease in anxiety and elevated mood. Additionally, tryptophan is an amino acid that is responsible for synthesizing serotonin, the âfeel-goodâ neurotransmitter. Increasing your intake of tryptophan results in higher levels of serotonin, which can not only improve your mood, but even your behavior.
4. Nuts
If youâre a fan of snacking throughout the day, start chowing down on some nuts. Like turkey, nuts can also help boost your serotonin levels, and it only takes one ounce of nuts such as walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts to improve your happiness.
5. Fish
Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, an important mood-boosting nutrient. Research shows that increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids can help relieve symptoms of depression. One study from the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry even found that omega-3 fatty acids are just as effective at improving mood as an antidepressant.
6. Leafy Greens
Greens such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and other lettuce contain folic acid, an important B vitamin that plays a role in mood regulation, including the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Research from the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry shows that increasing your intake of folate can help reduce depressive symptoms.
When in doubt, youâre always best sticking to whole, unprocessed foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, but the above foods especially can help keep you calm and positive overall.

What can one say? Only with God, was he able to complete his race. God was there and surely God saw his heart’s desire. More important I think, is that God was determine for Derek to be a Victor not a Victim!

I remember this well. I was watching this livee when it happened on television.
I was very moved, by the tenacity of this young man and his determination to finish the race. Even if it meant being last. at least he finished and what joy filled his soul. as well as all those that were watching!! Great video of encouragement and hope for those who have to face adversity. Thank you for posting. I was overwhelmed with gratitude once again of a fathers love. Speaking of God!

When Jesus cryed out to his father to “let the cup pass”, when we tortured him, beat and humiliated Jesus, his/our father was right there to help him through to the end of the race. Jesus demanded to go all the way to the end which is actually the beginning for us! The love shown to his son on the race track was most certainly moving, it makes you think about what our father in heaven does for us every day of our lifes!

A verse from a song by Larnelle Harris expresses our greatest race
So here is all my praise
Expressed with all my heart
Offered to the Friend who took my place
And ran a course I could not start
And when He saw in full
Just how much His love would cost
He still went the final mile between me and heaven
So I would not be lost

This is timely, coupled with this note I received this morning just makes it absolutely awesome! “Things are going to fall into place so that you can accomplish what God has placed in your heart. Even the hidden dreams that you’ve given up on, God has not given up on. Your mind may try to talk you out of it, but if you’ll listen with your heart, it will resonate on the inside of you. Don’t let discouragement hold you back or keep you down.” The end of the race is most important! Awesome! Awesome! A Broken Dream, A Father, and Hope! Wow!

when i attended a training in Tagaytay last September, this video had been presented by one of the participants.. boy! how it made me shed pools of tears! I have been wanting to have a copy of this..thanks a lot..!!!
human as we are, we need constant reminder that the race of life is not our own race.. we just have to be trusting that our Father above is ready to run with us in times that we thought we can no longer run and finish the race.

Sometimes we thought we can make it all alone but when problem comes that’s the only time we realize that our Father above does not only willing to help us but ready to be on our side to lift us up.

What a remarkable depiction of God’s love, of determination and hope. This video touched me to my core. I was at the point of giving up but this is encouragement to run on a little farther, to keep fighting, to keep trusting, to keep living.

What a very touching and inspiring video! I didn’t even realized my tears rolling from my eyes. I strongly believe that if there is a will there is hope. God is always on our side ready to pick us up whenever we fall. We just have to trust him and have faith on him as what I had been told over and over again in my early days that God help those who help themselves.

I admire the young mans determination to complete that which he had begun. Just as his father ran to his child’s side. I am so thankful that the God we love and serve is there to help us along lives journey. It’s because He LOVED me that I love HIm. Thank Lord for your deep unconditional Love. Truly Jesus YOU have NEVER left my side and for this I will be eternally grateful.

This ia a awesome video on being unstoppable. it requires a lot of mental and physical energy to have an attitude like Derek Redmond….and he has it because he has a father who is unstoppable. We all have God, our father. All we need to do is move on and move on.

A very touching video. Reminds us of the love and care of God for us especially in times of our adversities. God has taken cared of everything, even to the extent of giving up his life for our sake. We can’t compare that to any kind of adversities we have in this life..

that is what GOD OUR FATHER does for us in times of strive and pain. HE lifts us up so we can walk run crawl, to see us through another day. HIS love for us is such that with it in our lives ther is nothing we cant do. HE is there if only we would stop long enough to say hello. HE is there in every sunrise sunset or shower of rain and once you have opened your heart and given your life to him you will never be the same again for in HIM you have a friend for life and some one who will love you just the way you are.
